Effect of curcumin supplement on disease activity in patients with liver cirrhosis

Abstract
Liver sirrhosis, is a complicated and end-stage liver disease that, its charectristics are progressive fibrosis and structural dismiss of liver and because of the high barden of disease, several studies are performed to investigate causes and prevention and cure it.Recently, a few studies are performed in liver diseases animal models and, also human by administratin Curcumin witch is an active substance of the plant Turmeric(curcuma), that has the antioxidant and anti inflammatory effects. Goals:Evalution of Curcumin supplement on disease severity in patients with liver cirhhosis,as the main,and effect of Curcumin and placebo on MELD,Child-Pugh scores,and comparison between them,and evaluate of effect of curcumin and placebo on liver tests and effect of curcumin supplement on serum levels of liver enzymes AST,ALT,ALKP like above. Methods and materials: So we decided to perform a placebo-controlled double- blinded clinical trial with using curcumin supplement. Seventy people with liver sirhhosis in ages between twenty and seventy years old choosed and devided randomly in two groups, witch one administrated Curcumin supplementation and the other Placebo by dose of one gram in a day for twelve weeks. We collected demographic data and checked basement nessecities like, serum level of liver anzymes,ALT,ALKP,AST,Creatinin,Bilirubin,PT,PTT,INR,Na, and calculating MELD,MELD(i),MELD-Na,Child-Pugh scores and physical examinations and rechecking lab tests and scoring systems above , at the end of the study. Results: At last data of sixty patients collected,and analyzed and we see that scores of activity and severity of disease reduced in curcumin group(p=0.051,p=0.01,p<0.001,p<0.001) and alsoreduction of serum level of ALKP,INR,Total bilirubin and PT was observed.
