Epidemiology of injuries in children under 5 years of age referred to the emergency room Shohada Hospital affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in 2015

Abstract
Introduction: Children are both the most valuable and the most vulnerable age groups in the community. This group as a majority in Iran population are always confronting different injuries and accidents. Trauma is one of the most important reasons for referring to emergency wards and is the most prevalent reason for disabilities and mortalities within this group. The aim of this study was to epidemiologically assess injuries in under five children referring to shohada hospital emergency ward in 2015 – 2016. Method: This was a cross-sectional study. Census was used as the method of sampling including all the children under 5 years old referring to shohada hospital for injuries in 2015 – 2016. The extracted data were sex, age, admission day, discharge day, length of stay, type of injury, injured part or parts and insurance type that was extracted using HIS and medical records of the people admitted. SPSS version 21 software was used for data analysis. Results: Findings showed that most of injuries were for boys (59.4 %) in the age of 4 (41.4 %) the most prevalent insurance type was social security (50.1 %). The most prevalent injury was falling (44.3 %) and the most occurring damage was fracture (66.9%). Forearm as the part getting the most damage (22.07 %) was measured. There seen no meaningful relationship between child age and sex with the type of injury. Conclusion: The results showed that most of the injuries occurred in the 4th year of life. Fall was the most prevalent accident. Considering, children begin to play in open areas in 4 years old, so necessary education about injury preventions should be provided for their mothers. Also, safety measures should be considered in play grounds and homes.
