Background and Aim:
Smoking is one of the most important causes of premature death worldwide. Population aging is one of the most important issues of the present century. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases in old age and the second cause of disability. There are many factors that affect osteoarthritis, including smoking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between smoking status and social support in elderly patients with osteoarthritis referred to Educational-medical centers of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were conducted. Methods and materials: This cross-sectional study was performed on 384 elderly patients with osteoarthritis referred to Tabriz educational centers. Sampling was done in two stages. The data collection tools included demographic questionnaire, social support questionnaire and smoking status questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive and analytical statistics.
Findings: The findings of this study showed that about 16.1% of the elderly patients were smoker. Social, family, and other levels of support in non-smoker elderly with osteoarthritis were higher than smokers. Smoking was associated with social support in the elderly with osteoarthritis. The level of social support for non-smokers was higher than that of the smokers.
