Safety Assessment of Small Enterprises in Kurdistan Region/ Iraq using ILO Checkpoints
Abstract
These days, accidents are an integral part of the workplace. Therefore,more and more industries lose large workforce each year due to accidents at work. It usually divides into two categories: large industries andsmall and medium industries. Moreover, Numerous factors effectively determine the size of an industry, such as the number of workers, the number of wages paid to subordinates and the company's physical size. In this study, small industries in the Iraqi Kurdistan region in Sulaymaniyah are examined in terms of safety. In this regard, first, a safety checklist was created using the checkpoints of the International Labor Organization with having60 questions included. The researcher then completed the checklist by visiting small workshops in the Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah. Later, the final score of each workshop was calculated, and a safety score was obtained for each workshop. Among the studied dimensions, the physical hazards dimension received the lowest score. Also, the acquired mean safety score showed a significant difference between the five types of industries studied.Then the relationship between demographic information and safety scores was measured. Additionally, the average number of accidents that occur in the five different industries has shown to bedissimilar. From this study, it can be concluded that the type of work environment and activities can have significant effect on the safety of the workshops and the number of accidents that arise
