Epidemiology of comorbidity and complications of type 2 diabetes in rural population of Miandoab

Introduction: Diabetes as the sixth leading cause of death in the world and the fourth leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases, is an increasing international and local health problem and its prevalence and its financial burden on health services has increased. Therefore, this study was performed to determine the frequency of comorbidities and complications of type 2 diabetes in the rural population of Miandoab.
Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study that was performed on 459 rural population with type 2 diabetes in Miandoab. Sampling was performed in two stages. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 22 software.
Results: 66.7% of the sample were female. 80.8% were in the age groups of 50-60 and over 60 years. 80.2% of people were overweight and obese. 70.2% of people had at least one complication of diabetes. Cardiovascular disease was the most common complication in diabetic patients (17.7%). Also, 79.8% and 35.4% of people had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, respectively. 26.4% of people had a history of hospitalization due to complications of diabetes in the past year.
Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of diabetes complications and also the percentage of hospitalization due to diabetes complications, strengthening cross-sectoral colaboration, strengthening information infrastructure, optimal use of existing structures and capacities, especially manpower and health network structure, as well as concentration on properly implementation of the family physician program to control and prevent diabetes is essential.
