چکیده
Abstract Background and aims: Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF-19) is known as a novel metabolic regulating factor associated with improving effects on metabolic factors and reducing food intake. This study aimed to evaluate serum levels of FGF-19 in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) patients and its relationship with lipid and glycemic indices as weel as anthropometric parameters and food intake. Materials and methods: In this study, 84 diabetic patients and 84 non-diabetic individuals were divided into two subgroups based on BMI: obese people (BMI ≥30) and normal weight participants (18.5≥BMI>25). Demographic characteristics of the study subjects were recorded and anthropometric parameters as well as serum levels of lipid and glycemic indices were measured and compared between groups.Serum FGF-19 levels were assessed by ELISA and dietary intake of individuals was examined by a food frequency questionnaire. In each group, the relationship between FGF-19 and the measured items was investigated. Results: The mean age and BMI of the study subjects were 48.8 ± 10.8 years and 28.8 ± 5.3 kg / m2 respectively. Serum levels of FGF-19 in healthy individuals were higher than those in diabetics (250.4 ± 80.8 pg / ml vs. 245.5 ± 74.1 pg / ml), although this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.4). The mean serum level of FGF-19 was negatively associated with some metabolic items such as BMI, LDL, TC (P <0.01), and LDL / HDL (P= 0.02) in the healthy group with normal weight. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, the levels of FGF-19 were negatively correlated to BMI, LDL-c, TC and LDL / HDL in normal weight group of healthy individuals but no association was found between diabetic patients. More studies are needed to confirm these results. Keywords: Anthropometric measurement, FGF-19, Glycemic parameters, Lipid profile, obesity, Type 2 diabetes mellitus
