The Relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk and Prognosis and Improvement of Stroke Complications

Abstract

Stroke is the second most common cause of death and the first cause of disability in the world. According to studies, obstructive sleep apnea is one of the risk factors associated with stroke. On the other hand, some studies have shown that obstructive sleep apnea can be one of the factors affecting the severity, duration of disease, and mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of obstructive sleep apnea on the prognosis, improvement of complications and disabilities of stroke. Material & Method: In this prospective cohort study, 125 patients with stroke admitted to Razi Hospital of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups according to Stop-bang risk of apnea. Then severity of disability (mRS), disease (NIHSS), duration of hospitalization and mortality were evaluated in the first days, discharge and 3-month follow-up. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 23. Results: 86.4% of patients had at least one risk factor for stroke. The most common risk factors for stroke included hypertension (61.6%) and diabetes (28.8%). Although hospitalization and mortality were higher in highrisk group, no significant difference was observed between them (P = 0.14, 0.55, respectively). The course of NIHSS changes in the high-risk group was significantly different (P <0.01). The trend of NIHSS were significantly different in each group individually (P <0.01). The course of mRS changes was similar in two groups (P = 0.73). The trend of mRS were significantly different in each group individually (P <0.01).
