Abstract
Goiter refers to enlarged thyroeid gland which can be diffused or nodular. Nodular thyroid is a common disorder which is occured in about 3-7% of adults. Majority of thyroeid nodules are benign; however, malignancis have been reported in about 5-15% of cases. Ultrasonography is an optimal approach for the thyroeid gland evaluation, nodule detection and assessing cancer risk in thyroeid nodules. Autoimmune thyroeid disease is characterized by the presence of anti-TPO antibodies in serum and almost all patients with hashimato thyroiditis have high levels of anti-TPO antibody. Regarding the high prevalence of nodular guiter and the probable correlation between anti-TPO levels and fine needle aspiration (FNA) result, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relashionship between ultrasonography and FNA results in anti-TPO positive and negative nodular guiter patients. Material and method: In this cross-sectional study, 128 patients with nodular goiter reffered to Imam Reza endocrin clinic were enrolled from julay to November 2019. Anti-TPO levels higher and below 16 IU/ml were considered as positive and negative, respectively. All patients underwent thyroeid ultrasonography and the qualified nodules were subjected to FNA process. Result: Of 128 pateints, 33.6% and 66.4% were Anti_TPO positive and Anti-TPO negative, respectively. FNA was performed on 196 nodules. There was a significant relationship between sonographic and FNA results in low suspitious group, as well as benign and CLT groups cytopathologic FNA result (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in other comparisons between groups.
