comparison of salivary fluoride level following school _based fluoride varnish program and professional fluoride varnish therapy in dental office among 6_12 years old children
Abstract
Introduction: Dental caries are one of the most common chronic diseases in children that could be well prevented and controlled studies suggest that school_base fluoride varnish therapy can be effective in caries reduction and can be cost effective in some countries such as sweden. a long time period or access to complete information (in retrospective studies) is necessary to design a study which can assess the anti caries efficiency of the fluoride. according to prior studies saliva and plaque fluoride concentrations is inversely associated with caries increment and its measurement can be valuable in vivo method for evaluation of the potential anti caries efficacy of fluoride containing dental product
the aim of the present study is to compare salivary fluoride level after fluoride varnish therapy in schools and professional varnish therapy in dental clinic
method and materials: salivary samples was collected by dental student before and 30 minute after fluoride varnish application in schools(n=109) and in dental clinic(n=111) by pediatric dentistry specialist and salivary fluoride concentration was analysed with ion selective electrode of fluoride Data was analyzed using analysis of covariance ANCOVA at a p < 0.05 level of significance
results: in both groups of study, fluoride varnish therapy caused a significant enhancement salivary level of fluoride. And in comparation of salivary fluoride concentration after intervention there was no statistically significant difference between two groups.
Conclusion: school based fluoride varnish therapy can be effective as well as professional varnish therapy in enhancement of salivary fluoride level and probably in caries reduction.
