The Process of Adjustment with Lower Limb Amputation in Trauma Patient: A Grounded Theory.
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: The effect of amputation on an individual’s psychological condition as well as family and social relationships is undeniable because physical disability affects not only the psycho –social adjustment, but also the mental health when compared to normal people, such people are mostly experiencing social isolation. Therefore, any limb amputation not only is considered as a physical injury but is also followed by psychological –emotional damages. The present study aims to explain trauma patients’ understanding and experience during the process of adaptation with a lower limb amputation.
Materials and Methods: The present study was qualitative and conducted according to grounded theory between 2012 and 2014. With the use of purposeful and theoretical sampling 20 participants with lower limb amputation, social worker, manager and doctor were in referring to the Foundation of Veterans and the State Welfare Organization of Ardabil. Major source of data collection was in depth interviews, also other methods used as supplementary, the analysis of interviews and other data started since first interview and was conducted using the Strauss and Corbin principles’ of data analysis.
Finding: Data analysis identified six main categories including; impasse and social limitations, appeal of belief and religious Tendencies. The use of supportive resources, modify lifestyle, Discomfort annoying and Acceptance amputation. Participants’ main concern was impasse and social limitations, Wise self – Modulatory was recognized as the core variable that represents adjustment with lower limb amputation in study setting, and together connected all categories.
Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that although the participants complained about the severe post –amputation pain, using appropriate coping strategies, they tried to ease their condition so that the stresses arising from these factors could be reduced and they could achieve relative peace. Finally, a limited management, creating a new life, more active use of problem –and emotion –focused coping strategies (Folk man, Lazarus) along with an effective Religious coping and social support has paved the way for accepting the existing condition and situation.
