Abstract
Abstract: Background: The high prevalence of mental disorders and the effectiveness of ECT, this treatment has regarded as a useful and effective therapeutic. But it is associated with adverse psychological effects that can reinforce the patient’s problems and affect the mental health of the patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of supportive nursing care in anxiety, self -esteem and satisfaction of patients receiving ECT. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted in the Baharan psychiatric hospital of Zahedan. A total of 70 cases of patients who received ECT were randomly allocated to control (n=35) and intervention (n=35) groups. The data collection tools were demographic characteristics questionnaire, Spielberg State and Trait anxiety inventory (STAI), Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES) and Webster satisfaction questionnaire. Patients in the interventions group received the supportive nursing care from trained nurses on the intellectual, emotional and physical domains. The control group received only routine treatment. Anxiety, self –esteem and satisfaction level was measured and compared before and after intervention for two groups. The data was analyzed by SPSS using the chi –square test, the independent t –test and the paired t –test and the covariance. Results: Results showed that both groups were homogeneous on the socio –demographic differences. The mean anxiety in the intervention group compared with the control group was significantly reduced (p<0.001) and the mean self –esteem and satisfaction was significantly increased (p<0.001). While controlling the effects of individual and social variables, the result shows significant differences between two groups in the mean scores of anxiety, self –esteem and satisfaction after the intervention (p<0.001). Conclusion: The results confirmed supportive nursing care in reducing anxiety and increasing self –esteem and satisfaction of patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy. It is recommended to use this method for reducing anxiety and increasing self –esteem and satisfaction in patients receiving ECT.
