The Effect of Aromatherapy on Sexual Function of the Breastfeed Women: A Double –Blinded Randomized Clinical Trial.
Abstract
Abstract: Background: Breastfeeding affect sexual function due to psychological, biological and hormonal changes. We aimed to determine the effect of aromatherapy on sexual function in breastfeed women.
Methods: Eighty four breastfeed women in their 3-6 months after childbirth were randomly allocated into two intervention and control groups using permuted block randomization. The solution drops of aroma and placebo are placed on skin as follows: 2-3 drops, three times a day for 40 days. Sexual function was evaluated using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) before and after intervention. Chi square and independent t test was used for analyzing the data.
Results: There were no significant difference among the groups in terms of their baseline characteristics, including the mean score of the sexual function before the intervention. After the intervention the mean (SD) of the total score of the sexual function was significantly higher in the intervention group compared with the control, 29.0(3.3) vs. 24.4(4.9). Also, a significant statistical difference existed in all the six domains of sexual function (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain) (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Providing aromatherapy for breastfeed women may improve breastfeed women's sexual function and health.
