The Effect of Education- Modification Intervention on Psychosocial Factors and Asthma Control among Adolescents with Asthma in Respiratory Specialty Clinics of Tabriz -2011: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract: Introduction: Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood and adolescents Worldwide that can result in variable restriction in the physical, emotional and social aspects of the patient’s life. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of education-modificational intervention on psychosocial factors (attitude, self-efficacy, quality of life) and asthma control.
Methods: The present research is randomized clinical trial. A sample of 60 adolescents from 12 thru 18 years of age participates in the study. Groups will be assigned randomly to intervention and control groups. Measurements of, attitudes, quality of life, self- efficacy, and asthma control. Questionnaires were collected prior to intervention and five weeks post intervention in both groups. Intervention group receive the asthma education program and telephone follow up. Data Analyses were conducted with SPSS 13.0. Chi square & t tests were used.
Results: The difference in scores pre and post changes of the psychosocial variables and asthma control between the two groups showed statistically significant differences (p<0/05).Asthma education-modificational intervention was effective in increasing psychosocial factors, scores and asthma control improvement.
Conclusion: Since this type of intervention has the potential to improve the psychosocial factors and asthma control in adolescents with asthma. Recommended education about asthma triggers and modification performed directly with the participation of adolescents and the participant of parents in the intervention is reduced. Furthermore, such intervention is necessary in outpatient clinics.
