Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Readiness in caring for family, newly-added member, and self and regaining A pre-pregnancy functional status are the important aspects of maternal postpartum adjustment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between maternal self-efficacy, postpartum depression and functional status in Iranian mothers, 2015. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 437 newly delivered mothers visiting the healthcare centers of Bonab, Iran. Random sampling method was employed. Data was collected through socio-demographic characteristics, Edinburgh postpartum depression, maternal self-efficacy and functional status questionnaires. Analysis included descriptive statistics and Pearson, t-test, ANOVA and multivariate linear regression model was used to analyze the data. Results: Mean (SD) score of the maternal self-efficacy was 32.1 (4.1) (range: 10 to 40). Mean (SD) postpartum depression score was 8.3 (5.3) (range: 0 to 30) and Mean (SD) of the total functional status score was 2.3 (0.2) from the obtainable range score of 1 to4. The maximum and the minimum scores were in infant care [3.6 (0.3)], and social activities and society [1.4 (0.4)] subdomains, respectively. There was a significant inverse correlation between maternal self-efficacy and postpartum depression (r=-0.30, p<0.001).There was a significant inverse correlation between postpartum depression with total score of functional status (r=-0.14, p=0.003), self-care (r=-0.09, p=0.04) and social activities and society subscales (r=-0.1, p<0.001). In addition, there was a significant positive relationship between self-efficacy with overall score of functional status (r=0.33, p<0.001) and all of its sub-scales (r=0.23-0.12, p<0.05). Conclusion: Maternal self efficacy is variables that affect functional status and maternal postpartum depression. Therefore, the early diagnosis and treatment of depression on the one hand and the promotion of maternal self-efficacy on the other hand can improve it and help mothers in postpartum adjustment.
