Stressors and Coping Methods of Patients on Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis of Tabriz Imam Reza Teaching Hospital, 2009.
Abstract
Abstract: Background & Objectives: End stage renal disease patients are faced with multiple stressors which will impact on their level pf physical and psychosocial functioning. They must adjust to medical team and instruments and could control their stressors. The aim of this study is indication and comparing stressors and coping methods of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients.
Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive analytic study. All of the 70 patients on hemodialysis of Emam Reza teaching hospital with census and the same one for patients on peritoneal dialysis with simple random sampling which had consenting and inclusion criteria's were selected. Data collection instruments were demographic questionnaire, hemodialysis stressor scale (HSS), peritoneal dialysis stressor assessment scale (PDSAS) and Jalowiec Coping Scale (JCS) after validity and reliability assurance were used.
Results: Findings showed that the most stressors of hemodialysis patients were, feeling tired, boredom, cost of treatment/ transportation to treatment, and in peritoneal dialysis patients were continuous exchange, boredom, length of time for peritoneal dialysis. Results of comparing stressors of groups showed that the mean differences of stressors in two groups were significant as level of stress in hemodialysis patients were higher than peritoneal dialysis patients (p=0.05). results of comparing the coping methods showed that the mean differences of coping methods in two groups were significant as mean scores of coping methods in hemodialysis group was higher than the peritoneal dialysis group (p=0.05) also results of correlation between using and efficacy scores of the coping methods showed that the effective coping methods had higher using scores.
Conclusion: Present study showed that the major of the patients of two groups were frequently encountered with stressors and need to use coping methods. With the respect to importance of indication of essential stressors and effective coping methods, it is recommended that we can simplify the process of adjusting dialysis patients to stressors by preparing helpful educations and recognizing effective coping methods.
