Abstract
Abstract: Background & Objectives: Nowadays birth defects are the leading course of infants' inability and death in developed and developing countries. These defects impose additional charges, including costs of treatment, protection and education of patients, for their family and related organizations. Seventy percent of congenital anomalies are preventable. The aim of this study was to characterize the preventive services for birth defects in Tabriz (2008-2009). Materials & Methods: This is a health system research study. This research was done in organizations provide preventive services in Tabriz; including Health Center of Tabriz and Treatment affair of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Welfare and Rehabilitation Organization & Legal Medicine Organizations of Iran. Data were gathered through a check list developed by the researchers. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of data. Confidence interval analysis was used to calculate the 95% CI. Results: In primary prevention of congenital anomalies Health Center of Tabriz provided services about 43.7%. It was 82.4% for disease prevention department of organization Welfare and 50% for the primary prevention education programs. In the secondary prevention services, diagnosis and treatment before birth were 68.1% in state centers, 36.1% in private sector, and 8.31% in state for social security services and diagnosis and treatment after birth centers, 86% for private and 56.5% for social security. Third prevention of this program provided by department of rehabilitation services of Welfare organization is 100%. Conclusion: Findings showed a preference for a basic review of editing and executive education programs on primary prevention of congenital anomalies; furthermore, the most important issue is to coordinate services and relevant organizations for establishing consistencies between them this requires unwavering efforts of policy makers to implement and follow up codified strategic actions of the World Health Organization in the prevention of congenital anomalies.
