Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Genital infections are the most common cause of visiting gynecologists and midwives. Vaginitis is one of the most significant of them which was included 80% of un-routine visit of non -pregnant women. Trichomonal vaginitis is a sexually transmitted disease and the second cause of vaginal infections after bacterial infections; and the most common non -viral STIs. Drug therapy and other therapeutic approaches can be used for treatment of trichomonas vaginitis. Metronidazole tablet is the choice drug for treatment of this infection, and because of some side effects of it, is not much acceptable. On the other hands, the in vitro and in vivo resistance to metronidazole is increasing. So, investigators decided to evaluate the efficacy of salt water sitz bath on trichomonas vaginitis treatment in Tabriz Health Centers. Methods and Materials: This study was a randomized clinical trial which on them, from 5874 symptomatic women, 160 non –pregnant women with trichomonas virginals who had inclusion criteria and showed positive to wet smear test, were randomly classified into two treatment groups of salt water sitz bath and Metronidazole tablet. Results: In this research, the patients' mean age were 28.97±6.74 years; while the Min age was 19 and the Max was 42 years. Based on our findings in both groups, 83.1% patients after 7 days of initial treatment were cured by salt water sitz bath and wet smear test of them got negative. However, 91.4% of patients in metronidazole group (standard drug for trichomonas vaginitis) were treated. Fisher's exact test output showed that there were not a significant relation between treatment group and their efficacy (p=0.11); so, both treatments are effective in Trichomonal vaginitis treatment. Conclusions: On the basis of our results, this new treatment method is as effective as metronidazole and can be used in trichomonas vaginitis treatment. The advantages of this treatment in comparison with metronidazole tablet are safety and applying it for all age groups. Whereas people have a good background and high acceptances for applying of salt solution in treatment of many diseases; cost effectiveness and safety of this method; having no short and long term complications for patient; the incidence of trichomonas vaginitis and adverse effect of it on physical and psychological aspect of patients and their families; increasing in metronidazole resistance and presence of metronidazole side effects in human; and predisposing to HIV infection, this method can be prescribed to this patients.
