The Effect of Empowerment Program Education on Self Efficacy and Quality of Life in Diabetic Patients in Tabriz University of Medical Science Diabetes Education Center.
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: In spite of progresses that have been in the treatment of diabetes in recent years, many of patients still experience devastating complication of this disease. In 1990 empowerment education program was introduced to diabetic patients. The role of patients is to be active partner in their own care and the role of health authorities is to help patients make informed choices on helping the patients. With regards to these point that empowerment program affected by culture, what results would be by performing this program in Eastern and Asian countries? What effect it has on diabetes self-efficacy and quality of life?
Method: This is a quasi -experimental research. The main purpose is determining of the effect of empowerment program education on self –efficacy and quality of life in diabetic patients in Tabriz University of medical science diabetes education center. Target population is all of patients that have an active file in Sina hospital educational center. After a pilot study the necessary samples. The necessary sample size was to be used for 22 patients, but the researchers increase it to 30 patients. Samples was selected by randomized sampling method. Empowerment program education was performed on the basis of 5 –step behavior –change protocol. Diabetes empowerment scale (DES) was used for evaluating of diabetes self –efficacy and Audit of Diabetes –Dependent Quality (ADDQL) of life instrument was used for evaluating of diabetes quality of life. Mann –Whitney test was use for comparison.
Results: Empowerment of diabetic increases their ability in selecting goals and increase their struggle with over powering obstacles in goal receiving. Moreover, participating in empowerment sessions could increase patient struggle to get social support, increasing motivation and decision power and appropriate management of diabetes. More over diabetic patient's intention to change behavior could be increased and their quality of life could be improved after participating in empowerment sessions.
Discussion and Conclusion: According to the available results, although self-concept is affected by culture, educating of empowerment program would be possible in Moslem Asian countries. Yet, it seems it would be better have other studies in this field and the effect of empowerment program education should be studies during long term and it should be evaluated in other non Moslem Asian countries.
