Effect of Length of Stay in Emergency Ward on Hospital Outcome of Critically Ill Patients
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of length of stay in emergency ward on hospital outcome of critically ill patients in emergency wards of Tabriz Imam Reza and Sina hospitals.
Methodology
This study is a descriptive and analytical study which took place in emergency wards of Tabriz Imam Reza and Sina hospitals in year 2019. Sample size was determined based on reference study number 16 and in the end 450 patients entered the study. Inclusion criterium was the critically ill patient who required intensive care and had the indication to be admitted in an intensive care unit or needed operation room for emergent surgical care. The required variables for the study were collected and recorded in the prepared check list. Patients were followed up based on the time needed to leave the emergency ward and until their discharge from the emergency ward and their final discharge from the hospital. Final outcome of the patients was compared to their length of stay in the emergency ward.
Results
The mean age of the patients who were included in this study was 47.23±22.23 years. There were 272 males (58.2%) and 188 (41.8%) female patients. The mean length of stay for patients in the emergency ward was 4.60±3.97 hours. The mean admission time for patients in this study was 7.83±7.31 days. 100 patients (22.22%) passed away and 350 patients (77.77%) survived and there was not an association between mortality of the patients and their length of stay in the emergency ward. (P-value>0.05).
