Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: The oral contraceptive pills are the most important and effective methods of birth control. However, their effect depends on their correct and substitute continued use. Studies have reported that women who discontinue OCP' use often less reliable substitute contraceptive or don't use method at all, which often is leading to unintended pregnancies. Due to the little information about continuation rate a reasons for discontinuation of OCP in our region and because of the different results of the researches in the other countries, the researcher decided to study on continuation rate and reasons for LD contraceptive discontinuation among women referring to Tabriz Medical Science and health centers.
Materials and Methods: This was a cohort study. A medical science and health center was chosen randomly. 462 women who were using the LD contraceptive were interviewed. All these women were using LD contraceptive for the first time since 1379 to 1382. Analyzing the data was carried out through the life table analysis (Gehan test) in SPSS software.
Results: Continuing of LD contraceptive by women is, for 1 month, 6 months, 1 years, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 54 months, around 88/96, 588/01%, 44/59%, 37/59%, 30/52%, 19/06%, 9/99%, 2/7%. The most common reasons for discontinuation were, being angry 35/5%, vomiting 16/2% and wanted child 22%. There was a significant relationship between continuation rate and some variables such as OCP use as the first method, source of information, client's satisfaction, Husband's occupation and education of client and client's occupation.
Conclusion: In this study continuation rate was matched with the results of other researchers and they were the same. But for the most common reason for discontinuation about being angry weren't like with the results of other researchers. The results showed that the most unimportant side lead to discontinuation of LD contraceptive during the first months of use. Therefore for increasing the continuation rate was suggested adequate counseling about side effects and their proper management and contraindications in the duration all the time especially in the first months of use.
