Abstract
The demand for cosmetic surgery in the world has always been on the rise, and Iran is known as one of the high-ranking countries in the world in performing rhinoplasty surgeries. Given the growing number of rhinoplasty applicants, it is necessary to examine the role of psychological factors in the use of rhinoplasty surgeries for reducing postoperative dissatisfaction and preventing subsequent mental, social and economic problems for applicants as well as the health systems. Therefore, we aimed to compare psychiatric disorders among rhinoplasty applicants with normal individuals. Materials and Methods: This analytic cross-sectional study was performed on 50 applicants of rhinoplasty and 50 non-applicants of rhinoplasty, who were referred to the ENT department of Emam Reza teaching hospital of Tabriz during 2019. The data were collected based on SCL-90-R questionnaire and Global Severity Index (GSI), Positive Symptom Total (PST) and Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI) indicators were used to interpret the results of the questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test and U Mann-Whitney test in SPSS software version 22. In this study, a P-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant Results: In this study, GSI (P=0.002) and PST (P=0.000) indexes in rhinoplasty group were significantly higher than the control group, but PSDI index was not significantly different between rhinoplasty and control groups (P=0.337). Mean scores of paranoid thoughts (P=0.000), obsession and compulsion (P=0.001), sensitivity in relationships (P=0.000), depression (P=0.000), physical complaints (P=0.003) and psychosis (P=0.005) in the rhinoplasty group were significantly higher than the control group. Also, paranoid thoughts, obsession and compulsion, sensitivity in relationships, depression were the most common disorders observed in the rhinoplasty group, respectively.
