The Effect of Two Educational Methods on the Level of Knowledge and Adherence to Treatment in Dialysis Patients : A Clinical Trial Study

Abstract
Abstract: Background: Patients with chronic renal failure are facing the challenges that related to the hemodialysis in their lifetime. Patient education improves treatment outcomes. Because of importance of preventing complications during hemodialysis and its association with lack of knowledge and lack of proper reporting on appropriate manner about education of patients, this study aimed to compare the influence of two methods of face to face training and educational pamphlet on knowledge and adherence in hemodialysis patients was conducted. Materials and Methods: This study is a clinical trial on ۵۸ hemodialysis patients were admitted to Yazd hospital shaded Rahnemoun in ۱۳۹۱, the conditions for entry into the study were carried out. Collect data, a questionnaire was included demographic characteristics, CHeKS questionnaire to assess the knowledge and MOS questionnaire was used to measure adherence in hemodialysis patients. After collecting data in order to analyze data from SPSS ۱۶ software and descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and standard deviation) Inferential statistics (Chi-square, paired t-test, ANOVA and ANCOVA) were used. Results: Mean knowledge score and adherence to treatment in both groups Face to Face and educational pamphlet increased significantly after the intervention and post-intervention average increase knowledge score the face to face group ۲.۹۵ ± ۱۰.۲۵, in educational pamphlets group ۲.۶۵ ±۶.۴۷ and in control group was ۰.۹۹ ± ۰.۸۹ (P <۰.۰۰۱). Average increase in adherence score after intervention the face to face group ۲.۵۶ ± ۴.۲۰, in educational pamphlets group ۲.۲۲ ± ۲.۱۵ and in control group was ۱.۱۹ ± ۰.۱۱ (P <۰.۰۰۱). Conclusion: The results showed that the majority of hemodialysis patients participating in the study have low awareness and poor adherence to treatment, in this study face to face training was more effective educational pamphlets, Seems to face to face training in awareness and adherence to treatment more effective, Therefore the education of patients, face to face training method should be considered that could play a major in improving the quality of life and increase life expectancy.
