The Effect of Music and Aromatherapy on Anxiety Pain of Patients Undergoing Cholecystectomy

Abstract: Background and Aim: Today, control or reduce pain and anxiety after surgery, as an important component of post-surgical care is challenging. Due to the effects of other methods, there is a strong emphasis on the use of complementary alternative medicine therapies. This study aimed to investigate the effect of music and aromatherapy on anxiety and pain in patients with cholecystectomy was performed.
Method: this Single blind randomized clinical trial involving 90 patients with cholecystectomy in Training Center - Sinai Hospital of Tabriz (1392) conducted a random assignment of patients was performed using a simple random sampling and the music (n = 30) ,aromatherapy (n=30) and control groups(n = 30) were examined. For the music group, 8 and 16 hours after surgery, the music was played for 30-15 minutes. For the aroma group, 8 and 16 hours after surgery, 10 drops of rose water with a 12% concentration, within 2/5-5 cm above the nose to sniff out for three minutes. The control group continued routine care. Data collected included demographic information and a visual check of anxiety and pain collecting tools (VAS or Visual Analogue Scales) characteristics. By using the SPSS /13 software descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics were analyzed using Chi-square, ANOVA and Turkey post test.
Findings: Results showed that changes in the level of pain and anxiety control were different) p<0/05) in aroma therapy and music therapy groups.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the study it could be concluded that the effect of aromatherapy is more than music therapy on pain and anxiety in patients.
