Live Experiences of Iranian in Smoking Process and Developing Preventive Model
Abstract
Abstract: Background: smoking is the cause for many preventable deaths worldwide. The rate of smoking has not increased in Iran in the past two decades, but its increase among adolescents and young adults is a concern. It seems to prevent the onset of cigarette smoking and confront with it’s, the identification of concepts of smoking and smoking process were essential.
Method: in this study cigarette smoking process was explored by qualitative research in grounded theory method. The participants were 38 and they were selected from convenience people with maximum diversity to reach necessary worthiness of data. Were collected by in-depth unstructured interviews, transcribed verbatim, and simultaneously coded. Subsequently, they were analyzed through Strauss & Corbin method (1998).
Results: in cigarette smoking-cigarette cessation process was emerged two themes: cigarette smoking and cigarette cessation process, the cigarette smoking had 3 subgroups included vulnerability to smoking, starting of cigarette smoking, starting of cigarette smoking, and stabilization of cigarette smoking. The cigarette cessation had 4 subgroups included motivations of smoking cessation, temporary cessation of smoking, relapse of, smoking and permanent cessation of smoking. The core variable these seven subcategories and two main subcategories were institutionalization of knowledge.
Conclusions: the participant’s experiences with regard to cigarette smoking can affect their understanding of the concepts of smoking. Recognition of smoking among children, modification of wrong beliefs about smoking, empowerment of the individuals against smoking from the very childhood, consideration of familial stress and crisis , and ultimately ,paying attention to the role of social variables will play a major role in prevention of smoking and encouraging individual to quit smoking. Identification and analysis of participant experiments result in designing to Iranian prevention model of smoking and use of this model requires participation and coordination of government, private volunteer institution.
