Evaluation of prevalence of anatomical variations of ethmoid sinus and pneumatization of nasal septum by Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in refferal patients to Tabriz Dental Faculty in the year of 2020 – 2021
Abstract
Introduction: it is of great importance to perform radiographic assessments before any sinus and nose surgeries so as to improve outcomes and get favourable treatment prognoses. The study was conducted to assess probable anatomical variations of ethmoid sinus and septum pneumotization using CBCT in Tabriz faculty of dentistry in 2019-2020.
Materials and methods: in this cross-sectional study CBCT images of 300 referrals to the Radiology ward of faculty of dentistry were selected randomly. The minimum age was 20 years. Images with high quality and low artifacts were selected. They were analysed in a semi-dark room on a negatoscope in which the prevalence of large ethmoid bulla, assymetry of the ethmoid roof , puemontization of uncinate process and septum were determined. Data analysis was done through SPSS ver 20 using chi square and Fisher Exact tests.
Results: the prevalence of septum pnuemotiation was 49%. there was no significant difference between the variables in terms of gender. Meanwhile, septum pnuemotiation ,large ethmoid bulla, and assymetry of the ethmoid roof ,were correlated significantly with age.
Conclusion: it was revealed that the most common variation was septum pnuemotizaton.
