Evaluation of the effect of ozon gel on the clinical and radiographic success rate of partial pulpectomy of primary molars with irriversible pulpitis
Abstract
Background and goal:
Rinsing solutions used during pulpectomy of deciduous teeth must effectively remove tissue debris and the smear layer but at the same time they should be safe and biocompatible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of canal disinfection with ozone gel on the clinical and radiographic success of partial pulpectomy of deciduous molars with irreversible pulpitis.
Methods and materials:
This single-blind randomized clinical trial study coded IR.TBZMED.REC.1399.233 was conducted on 50 deciduous molars in 25 children aged 4 to 8 years who required bilateral first molar partial pulpectomy or bilateral second molar partial pulpectomy in the maxilla or mandible using a split mouth technique. In the experimental group, the desired tooth was anesthetized and isolated with a rubberdam. After removing all the caries and debris, an access hole was created. The contents of the pulp chamber and canals were removed and washed with 1% hypochlorite and normal salineAfter drying the canals, the canal walls were disinfected with a paper cone soaked with ozone gel and the canals were filled with ZOE. In the control group, all steps were performed and only routine canal wash solutions were used. Finally, the crown of the teeth were restored with amalgam or ssc. Clinical and radiographic success were evaluated at periods of 1 and 6 month follow-ups by a pediatrician who was unaware of the type of treatment and disinfectant used.
Results:
The clinical success rate in both the ozone gel and 1% hypochlorite groups was 100%.There was no significant difference in radiographic success between 1% hypochlorite (84%) and ozone gel (88%) groups. In the ozone gel group, clinical and radiographic success rates were similar. In the 1% hypochlorite group, clinical and radiographic success rates were also similar.
Conclusion:
Application of ozone gel as a disinfectant along with routine rinsing is recommended in the pulpectomy of deciduous teeth with irreversible pulpitis to improve prognosis.
