A Survey of Nurses 'and Physicians' Attitudes Towards a Professional Physician-Nurse Relationship and Its Relationship with Teamwork and Success of Nurses in the Emergency Department of Teaching and Social Security Hospitals in Tabriz, 2016

Introduction: Considering that patient care is a process and all members have a direct role in the success of this process. The professional communication and teamwork of medical staff is one of the particular importance. Therefore, having a strong, correct and professional relationship between different medical staff can improve the quality of medical services and care provided to the patient. The aim of this study was to investigate the professional relationship between physician and nurse and its relationship with teamwork and success of nurses in the emergency department.
Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational study in which nurses and physicians working in the emergency department of teaching hospitals affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and Social Security in 1397 participated. To collect data, data collection tools including demographic characteristics, questionnaire to assess the relationship between the profession of physicians and nurses from the perspective of nurses and physicians, questionnaire to assess teamwork of nurses, questionnaire to assess the success of nurses were used. Data collected from the samples were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests with SPSS ver.21 statistical software.
Results: The results of the present study showed that the mean total score of physician-nurse professional relationship was about 66.84 (12.61) of the achievable score range of 221-110 and the mean score of physician-nurse professional relationship from the perspective of physicians was equal (7.65) 88.95 from the range of achievable score 110-22, which is at a good level based on the scoring of the questionnaire. Also, the average score of nurses 'teamwork was about 130.09 (27.04) and the average total score of nurses' work success was about 163.91 (17.14). Also, the relationship between teamwork and the relationship between physician and nurse (r = 0.31 and p <0.01) has a statistically positive and significant relationship. Correlation between job success and physician-nurse professional relationship (r = 0.10 and p <0.05) which can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between work success and physician-nurse professional relationship in the study. There is a statistically significant positive relationship between teamwork and work success (r = 0.45 and p <0.01(
Conclusion: Considering the importance of the physician-nurse professional relationship, it is necessary to pay more attention to the effective factors in its promotion. Also, considering the significant relationship between professionalism and teamwork and work success, planning to hold trainings and workshops to strengthen the relationship between professionalism, teamwork and work success in the training program for nurses and nursing students is recommended.
