Barriers in Patients’ Pain Relief from Nurses and Patients’ Viewpoint in Surgical Wards, Urmia, 1997.
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Pain is the most common reason to seek health care (16). The person is in pain often experiences pain as an all. Consuming reality and wants only one nursing intervention: Pain relief (31). The nurses spends more time with the patient with pain and therefore has the opportunity to make a significant contribution toward increasing the patients comfort and relieving pain (16). Many barriers is in front of patient’s pain relief (17, 22, 24, 30, and 32). This study designed for determine of barriers in patient’s pain relief in surgical patients from nurses and patient’s viewpoint in the hospital of affiliated to Urmia Medical Sciences University.
Method: This research is a descriptive study.
Data Collection: Data were gathered by two questionnaire, first questionnaire for information gathering from patients and second questionnaire for information gathering from nurses. Measurement criterion in both questionnaire was Likert scale.
Setting & Sampling: The research was done in 40 nurses and 62 patients. Nurses had been selected through purposive sampling method, and patients had been selected through quota sampling method. Research performed in surgery wards of Urmia Medical Sciences University dependent hospitals (Imam Khomeini & Taleghani).
Results: The results is shown in 21 tables and 9 charts. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. The finding showed the most common important barriers in pain relief, from nurse’s viewpoint, were: Deficit of analgesic drugs (x=4.02), unpresented of appropriate criterion for determine pain intensity (x=3.87), and existence of limitation in use of narcotic drugs (x=3.77). From patient’s viewpoint the most common important barriers in pain relief were: unpresented of enough money for buying of analgesic drugs (x=3.74), deficit of analgesic drugs (x=3.42), and inattention of physician to patient’s pain (x=3.14).
Discussion: Regarding the main goal of the research “determine of pain relief barriers in surgical patients, from nurse’s and patient’s viewpoint” the result showed that the most important barriers both nurse’s and patient’s viewpoint were financial –management group barriers. Other group barriers to arrange the wording of Physician related barriers, Nurses related barriers, and patients related barriers. The result of this research with the exception of patient’s related barriers, that this research has been recognized unimportant (x<3), to be similar to with previous research results (24, 32, 33).
