The Effect of Teaching on Self-care Knowledge in Patients under Chemotherapy, Tabriz, 1996.
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: The overall aim of this thesis is to determine the effects of training on the self-care knowledge rates of chemotherapy patients, being confined to bed in Shahid Ghazi Tabatabaei Hospital.
Methods: This is a semi –experimental study, in which the data are collected by using a questionnaire being designed in two parts (including “demographic parameters” and “special research goals”). 40 chemotherapy patients of the above –called hospital were selected for this research. These patients were under care for some time. The method of selection was in fact a goal -oriented random sampling technique. Statistical methods, namely T-test and chi- squared were carried out as basis tools for comparison and analysis of the results.
Results: The results of statistical analysis showed that there was not a significant correlation between a number of independent variable (including personal characteristics and difference in average scores before and after training, such as age, sex, education, business, marital status, residential unit, the duration and course of chemotherapy) and dependent variable (that is self- care knowledge rates) and training with a 99.5% confidence level has much effect on the self-care knowledge. Also the chi-squared results indicated that variables such as sex, age, business, education, marital status, residential place, duration and course of chemotherapy, did not influence the rate of training before and after training course. That is why the hypo-these being established in this research were rejected.
Discussion & Conclusion: As the side effects experiments with regards to the use of chemotherapy drugs show and due to the lack of adequate knowledge about the predictive ways, controlling and treatment their symptoms, most patients tend to cease their treatment (chemotherapy) in half –way of therapy: Therefore, there is a great need among the patients (especially those subjected) tube trained by nurses. The improved techniques of training and self –care should be used by the nurses to control the side –effects of chemotherapy as well as to in force the patients to follow up their treatment procedures, willingly.
