To Study of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Mothers of under 5 Years Old Children with Pneumonia referring to Health Centers in Tabriz.
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Every year approximately 14 million child under 5 die and 1/3 of this is due to acute respiratory infections and 75% of these deaths are due to pneumonia. Pneumonia is considered as one of the illnesses which needs a lot of care and needs a fast correct diagnosis in order to be cured. Failure of the programming in countries now a days, is due to people’s believes which are still remaining unknown and traditional values and hygiene manners of them. Therefore, for determination of the pneumonia problems in children understanding the amount of awareness, believe, and practice of mothers about the pneumonia is very important. One of the most important roles of the nurses is giving knowledge ti people about health and prevention of the illness which is almost impossible without knowing the weak and strong point of the people. So researcher has considered a research with the title of surveying knowledge, attitude and practice of mothers of under 5 years old children who call on the health centers or clinics in Tabriz in relation with pneumonia very essential.
Method & Materials: This research was a descriptive survey and from knowledge, attitude and practice type. The method of collecting information, interview and expressing the collection of information was a questionnaire including 4 sections: personal –social characteristics of the units of under survey, questions about the practice, knowledge and attitude. Units of the society of the research were mothers calling at the clinic centers which 180 of them were selected by easy sampling and from the centers which were under the Health center of Tabriz.
Results: Out came consequences from the survey with the use of descriptive and presumption statistics mentioned in 58 tables and 3 charts show that 57.8% of mothers didn’t know that pneumonia is contagious, 75.6% didn’t know the key symptom of pneumonia (chest in drowning) and 71.1% of mothers didn’t know that they should continue the prescribed antibiotic even after the subsidization of the fever too. 76.7% of mothers didn’t believe that complete vaccination will prevent pneumonia, 81.1% of mothers didn’t know that they should give a lot of liquid to the child suffering from pneumonia. 71.1% of mothers didn’t separate the child from the will people to prevent their child from pneumonia.
Discussion: With regard to the main aim of the survey “determination of knowledge, attitude and practice of mothers under 5 year old children in relation to pneumonia” 61.7% of mothers had middle knowledge, 23.9% low knowledge and 14.4% high knowledge. 52.2% pessimistic ideas and 47.8% had optimistic ideas. 71.1% had middle practice, 15.6% weak practice, and 13.3% good practice. In all knowledge and practice of mothers were lower than desired limits, therefore, the results of this survey could help health responsible and nurses to make training courses to raise the health knowledge and improve the practice of mothers.
