The study of efficacy of memantin on neuropathy in diabetic patients-single blind randomized clinical trial
Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine disorders and diabetic neuropathy is one of the microvascular complications in chronic diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy can lead to impaired quality of life. Common symptoms of neuropathy include pain, tingling, numbness, burning, and electric shock .
Purpose: Study the effect of Memantine on diabetic neuropathy (DN).
Methods: This study was a single-blind randomized clinical trial performed as a pilot on 100 patients with DN between the ages of 18 and 75 years for 8 weeks. Patients were randomly assigned to one of the two test and control groups. The study period was 8 weeks,To monitor patients, the DN4 questionnaire and Tests to diagnose and evaluate the extent of neuropathy was completed in the two stages before the start of treatment and at the end of the study. Patients in the test group received memantine (first dose of 5 mg twice daily for the first week and 10 mg twice daily for the next week until the end of the eighth week) and patients in the control group, They received gabapentin (at a dose of 300 mg 1 daily)
The DN4 questionnaire was used to monitor patients in 2 stages of the study, ie before the start of the study and at the end of the study
Results: Based on the data obtained from the score variable of the questionnaire (Score) in the control and test group, it was determined that the administration of memantine in the test group showed a significant difference in the score of the questionnaire before and at the end of the Study.
Conclusion: Administration of memantine in patients with diabetic neuropathy has been more effective in reducing the severity of neuropathic pain.
