Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is effectively inhibited by advanced periodontal inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the simultaneous effects of Q10 and SRP administration on periodontal and gingival indices in controlled diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: In this double-blind randomized clinical trial number 49867, 42 controlled diabetic patients referred to the periodontology department of Tabriz Dental School who had chronic periodontitis and were eligible for inclusion were randomly selected.Patients were divided into placebo and Q10 and then treated with SRP.Patients and therapists were blinded to the type of drug. BOP, PD, CAL, PI and GI indices were measured before the intervention and one month after treatment. Data were analyzed by SPSS 17 software and t-test and paired t-test. Results: In both control group (SRP treatment) and intervention group (SRP treatment and oral use of coenzyme Q10) during a month, a significant decrease was observed in all indicators of BOP, PD, CAL, PI and GI.One month after the intervention, the mean of BOP, PD, CAL, PI indices in the intervention group was significantly lower than the control group. But the GI index was similar in the two groups. Conclusion:. Oral coenzyme Q10 in combination with SRP, accelerates the healing process of periodontitis in patients with controlled diabetes.
