Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Young age pregnancies have been of concern to the health professional, because of the increased risk to mother and fetus. Some reports have shown an increased incidence of obstetric complications, while others have not. This contraventions became motivation to survey, Outcome of pregnancy in young ages in the two educational and treatment centers of Taleghanee and Alzahra in Tabriz City. Methods & Material: A matched cohort design was used. The pregnancies of 300 nulliparous women aged 19 and below at our two medical centers (Taleghanee and Alzahra) were compared to 300 nulliparous controls aged 20-29, matched for race, year of delivery, and economic status. All of them had prenatal care. Multiple gestation, anemia and history of medical surgical disorder were exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed by descriptive and deductive statistics. Results: There were no significant differences between the study and control groups in pregnancy induced hypertension (2.3 versus 4%), gestational age, fetus presentation, mean birth weight (2890.68 versus 2959.3 g) and use of oxytocin (12 versus 11%). Nevertheless, the duration of active phase, second phase and cesarean delivery were significantly lower in study group (3.09 versus 3.26 hours, Z=2.42, Zc-1.96, 30.98 versus 33.99 min, Z=2.66, Zc=1.96, and 8.3 versus 25.3%, p<0.001, respectively). The incidence of operative vaginal delivery almost was similar (less than 1%). There were significant differences between two groups in 5th Min Apgar score and stillbirth (9.33 versus 9.7, Z=1.96 and 5 versus 1.7%, P=0.04). It is necessary to remain that low Apgar score on 5th min and high incidence of still birth in study group was found in preterm labor. Discussion: Outcomes of pregnancy at two groups almost were similar. Therefore results showed that age is not effective factor on outcome of pregnancy in this study.
