Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Workplace violence is one of the major causes of decrease in nurses’ efficacy and quality of healthcare services. Resilience, as an Individual personality character, is one of ways of coping with and adapting to difficulties of life. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between resilience and exposure to violence in emergency nurses working in educational-therapeutic institutions of Tabriz. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 118 emergency nurses in educational-therapeutic institutions of Tabriz. The subjects were selected based on a quota convenience sampling method. A demographic questionnaire, the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Modified Questionnaire of Workplace Violence in Health Sector were used for data collection. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using descriptive and inferential data. Results: The majority of nurses participating in this study were female (68.6%), married (77%), permanently employed with a 1-5 year of work experience (46.6%) and aged between 20 and 29 years (45.8%). This study showed that most of the cases of violence were verbal (80.5%) and physical (25.4%) threats respectively. The mean resilience score of the participating nurses was 25.05±5.79 in the possible range of 0-40 which had a significant correlation with the working Condition (fixed or changing shifts) (p value= 0.03) among the studied demographic traits. The independent t-test showed that there is a significant relationship between mean resilience score and exposure to physical violence (p value= 0.01) and verbal threats (p value<0.01). The results of logistic regression showed that lower resilience predicted verbal and physical threats against the individual. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed an inverse relationship between resilience and exposure to violence. The study results also revealed that the resilience score in nurses who work in fixed shifts is higher than nurses who work in rotating shifts. So we can suggest that with improvement of the resilience of nurses by means of education, we could decrease the rate of violence and improve healthcare services provided by nurses.
