Abstract
Introduction: The use of periodontal dressing in addition to the protective effects of wounds can have therapeutic agents and according to existing studies, has the properties of increasing the immune system and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of aloe vera gel after Periodontal flap surgeries. Materials and Methods: This is a clinical trial study. In this study, twenty two patients with equal severity of periodontal disease were selected in two parts that require a type of surgery (modified widman flap). For each patient, one surgeon performed both surgeries. After selecting the patients, one side of the patients was randomly assigned as the control group and the other side of the patients as the aloe vera group. In the aloe vera group, the dressing was mixed with aloe vera gel and placed on the surgical site. Only the dressing was placed on the control side. Patients were evaluated at 7 and 14 days postoperatively. Clinical parameters of gingival color, stability, presence of granular tissue and ease of feeding were evaluated. Data were entered into SPSS software version 24 and analyzed. Indepndept t test and chi square were used to analyze the analytical statistics. Results: The results showed that on the first, second and third days, aloe vera gel had no effect on pain (P> 0.05). Time (one week and two weeks) had a positive effect on gum color, granular tissue size, gingival consistency in the experimental and control groups (P <0.05). Also on the 7th and 14th day, aloe vera gel had no effect on the size of granular tissue, gingival consistency. (P> 0.05) The results also showed that on the 7th day, aloe vera gel had no effect on ease of feeding. (P = 0.1) Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the use of aloe vera gel after surgery does not reduce pain and has no effect on gum color, granular tissue size, gingival consistency and nutritional status. The passage of time also had a positive effect on the amount of pain and color of the gums and the size of the granular tissue and the consistency of the gums and nutritional status. The use of aloe vera gel in the treatment of periodontal flap surgery is recommended because aloe vera gel is a completely herbal medicine with the least side effects and the lowest cost.
