Abstract
Few studies investigated the effects of packing before rhinoplasty on reducing agitation and the recovery period of patients. Meanwhile, these few studies did not report the share of this method clearly. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effects of intentional obstruction of the nostrils a night before the surgery on the patient's restlessness during the recovery after rhinoplasty surgery. Materials and Methods: The current clinical trial study was conducted from 2018 to 2019 on 50 patients who were scheduled for rhinoplasty surgery in Imam Reza Hospital of Tabriz. Patients were randomly assigned to the case (embedding a nasal pack a night before the surgery for one hour) and control groups. The hemodynamic status and agitation intensity of patients during their stay in the recovery unit were compared using X2 tests and Fisher's exact test in SPSS software version 20 at the significance level of less than 0.05. Results: Investigating the intensity of agitation of patients in the two groups during their stay in the recovery room showed that the mean intensity of agitation of the case group was 5.05 ± 00.15 and the mean intensity of agitation in the control group was 05.10 ± 00.30 (P = 0.396); there was no significant difference concerning the intensity of agitation between different groups (P <0.05). Concerning side effects such as laryngospasm, the need for sedative and antiemetic drugs was not significantly different between the two groups (P <0.05).
