Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: A progestin only injectable method of birth control, Depo-Provera (DMPA) offers safe, reversible and long- lasting contraception as effective as surgical sterilization. The risk of pregnancy while using DMPA is extremely low up to 16 weeks after an injection (0.3% per year). More than 13 million women worldwide use DMPA of contraception. As with all long-lasting progestin contraceptives, menstrual changes constitute the most important side effects of DMPA use. Other side effects including weight again, headaches, bloating of breasts and depression. Material and Methods: This survey is one descriptive study which carried on in order to evaluate of knowledge, Attitude and Practice of user’s Depo-Provera from it. Data collection instrument including questionnaire completed by investigator from women. 200 women that were using from DMPA during 1998, were chosen, with accidental sampling method, from between all women referred to Tabriz Health Centers. Mean, Standard deviation, one way ANOVA, t test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. Results: Most of (73.0%) women had moderate and only 3.5% had good knowledge about the Depo-Provera. Most to (86.0%) women had positive attitude. The 3, 6, 9 and 12 month continuation rates were 17.5%, 29.5%, 20.0% and 33.3%, respectively. The rate of contraceptive failure was 0.0% Menstrual disorders in 46.5% women, were Couse of discontinuation. There was not a significant correlation between knowledge for Attitude and number of injections (P>0.05), but there was a significant correlation between Attitude for number of injections (r=0.18, P<0.01). Conclusion: According to WHO announcement, any couples can consciously use contraceptives but recent research finding showed that the use continuation rate for one year even in comparison with the results of some other research in the world, was low and most of women had not good knowledge from DMPA. In order to better use of DMPA and increase continuation rate, the women must be educated and increase their knowledge about use of DMPA, complications and contraindications.
