Level of serum selenium in the sepsis patients hospitalized in Imam Reza and Sina Tabriz Hospitals
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the serum selenium level in sepsis patients admitted to the infectious ward of Tabriz Imam Reza and Sina. Materials and Methods: In this study, we evaluated the number of patients admitted to Imam Reza and Sina hospitals in Tabriz with sepsis. The patients were divided into three groups: sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock. The results of laboratory tests and serum selenium level were evaluated by furnace adsorption. Results: The results showed that mortality rate was 4.9%. Meanwhile, 32.9% of patients had complete remission and 62.2% had partial remission. The most common complaint was fever and chills with a frequency of 36.6%. The most common clinical diagnosis was pneumonia with a frequency of 23.3%. The most common source of sepsis in the studied patients was urinary tract infections and skin infections with a frequency of 18.3% and 14.6%, respectively. Most of the patients had sepsis and severe sepsis with a frequency of 37.8%. Also, 24.4% of patients had septic shock. In general, 34 positive cultures were observed. The mean±SD of serum selenium level in the studied patients was 44.10 ± 20.63 with a mean of 38.5. The highest level of serum selenium was observed in patients with sepsis and the lowest in patients with septic shock.
