Effect of Damask Rose Oil on Quality of Sleep and Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Today, the most dangerous occurrence that the community and healthcare staff are facing it, is the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases. One of the chronic diseases that cause significant stress to patients is chronic renal failure. Fatigue and sleep disorders are common problems in hemodialysis patients and aromatherapy is a common non-pharmacological approach adopted to reduce fatigue levels and increas the quality ofsleep in them. Different results have been obtained by using this technique in various studies. Despite the numerous properties of Damask rose oil, no study was found to have investigated its aroma therapeutic effects in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Damask rose oil on sleep quality and fatigue in hemodialysis patients.
Method: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 68 patients with kidney disease aged 18-65 years who were admitted to hemodialysis ward of Imam Reza Medical Center. Participants were selected using convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to two intervention (n=31) and control groups (n=37). The intervention group received 3 drops of Damask rose oil for one month and the control group did not receive any intervention.Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed by SPSS ver 21.
Results: Before the intervention, based on independent t-test, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of their mean fatigue scores (p=0.12) and quality of sleep (p=0.26); however, the mean fatigue score of the intervention group significantly decreased in comparison with that of the control group after the intervention (p= 0.001). Also, based on independent t-test, the mean quality of sleep score of the intervention group significantly increased in comparison with that of the control group after the intervention (p=0.001).
Discussion: Based on the results of this study, it was found that the Damask rose oil had a positive effect on reducing fatigue and increasing sleep quality in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, we can introduce the Damask rose oil and aromatherapy as a part of complementary medicine as a cost-effective approach and useful technique to alleviate some of the physical and mental problems of people with kidney failure and other chronic diseases including cancer.
