Abstract
Introduction The most common benign tumors of the salivary glands are pleomorphic adenomas and the most common malignant tumors are mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Numerous studies show that mast cells play an important and vital role in tumorogenesis and tumor growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the number of mast cells in the most common benign and malignant tumors of the salivary glands as well as normal salivary gland tissue in patients referred to the School of Dentistry and Imam Reza Hospital. materials and methods In this cross-sectional retrospective study, 15 pleomorphic adenoma, 10 mucoepidermoid carcinoma and 10 control group from the archives of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology department of Tabriz Dental School and Imam Reza Hospital were stained with toluene blue method and finally mastcells count was reported on average. The data obtained from the study were reported using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation). To compare the frequency of mast cells in 3 groups, if the data were normal, one-way analysis of variance was used and if the data were not normal, the nonparametric equivalent of Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Significance level was considered p <0.05 and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 17. Results Out of 25 patients, 10 were male and 15 were female. The mean age of patients in the pleomorphic adenoma group was 38.8±13.72 years and in the mucoepidermoid carcinoma group was 47.07±14.95 years. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean number of mast cells in the pleomorphic adenoma group and in both groups of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and control and the mean number of mast cells in the pleomorphic adenoma was higher than the mean in both other groups (P - value < 0/001). There was a statistically significant difference between the mean number of mast cells in the mucoepidermoid carcinoma and control group and the mean number of mast cells was higher in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (P-value <0.001). Conclusion The results of this study show that the density of mast cells in benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland are higher than normal tissue, which could indicate the role of mast cells in the tumorogenesis.
