Abstract
The aim of this study is the evaluation of quality of life effect of tonsillectomy in adults with chronic or recurrent tonsillitis.
Methods: In a descriptive-analytic study we enrolled 40 adults aged more than 14 years with chronic or recurrent tonsillitis referring to private office or ENT clinic of Tabriz Imam Reza hospital in the duration of study (6 months, beginning from March 2012) after achieving inclusion criteria. We used standard quality of life questionnaires (GBI and GHSI) for assessing the quality of life of patients before and after the surgery. The questionnaires were completed for patients before and after surgery. All data from questionnaires was entered to SPSS software and was analyzed using proper tests.
Results: The mean age of patients was 26.20±6.42 years, 60% of patients were male and 40% were female. The most frequent chief complaint was halitosis with snoring which was allocated up to 30%. The overall score of quality of life, general health subscale, and social health subscale was significantly different before and after the surgery which means the quality of life has increased significantly after the surgery. The difference in quality of life in physical activity was not significant before and after the surgery. In patients’ assessment of surgery results 35 patients (87.5%) had complete satisfaction, 3 (7.5%) had a relative satisfaction and 2 patients (5%) had not satisfaction.
