Abstract
Introduction: Cirrhosis of the liver is the end stage of chronic liver disease. Among the many liver disorders that can lead to cirrhosis, some progress rapidly and others progress slowly. There are numerous studies showing that the frequency of some oral manifestation among the patients with liver cirrhosis is more than the normal population. Therefore, the present study aims at investigating the frequency of oral manifestations among the patients with liver cirrhosis. Material and methods: In the present study, the patients with different degrees of hepatic failure were studies who had referred to Imam Reza Hospital and Specialized Clinic of Tabriz Faculty of Dentistry in 2020. The oral manifestations were diagnosed through the examination of patients by the senior students of dentistry. The healthy people who had no disease and didn’t smoke were categorized as the control group. To investigate the data, the descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used. Findings: No clinical manifestation was seen among the healthy people and 6.7% and 50% people with liver failure were suffering herpes labial and petechia, respectively, and the remaining 43.3% had no clinical manifestation. Only 5.3% and 47.4% of men with liver failure were suffering herpes labial and petechia and other 47.4% had also no manifestation. 9.1% and 54.5% of women with liver failure were suffering herpes labial and petechia and other 36.4% had also no manifestation which was not statistically significant (P < 0.05). All the patients with severe disease were afflicted with the petechia which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The healthy people have no oral manifestation and the people with liver failure were afflicted with petechia in 50% cases and only a few percent by herpes labial. There is no significant difference in clinical manifestations among the patients with liver failure in terms of gender and age. There is connection between the prevalence of oral manifestations and disease severity among the patients with the liver failure.
