Evaluation of relation of serum and salivary level of Potassium and Glucose in healthy people referred to Tabriz Dental Faculty
Abstract
Introduction
to presence of blood in urine and cerebrospinal fluid which are useful in diagnosis of the systemic disease’s treatment processes. The previous observations showed that an association might be existed in the potassium concentration in saliva and serum. Although, these results are sometimes contradictory.
Method
This descriptive study was conducted on 40 patients referring to Tabriz Dental School. These patients were extracted according to standard protocols of serum and salivary. Data were presented mean (± standard deviation) and frequency (percentages) for quantitative and qualitative variables respectively. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS24 software. To determine the correlation between serum and salivary levels of biomarkers was performed Pearson test by SPSS24 software .The significance level of P<0.05 was considered .
Result
From 40 subjects we studied there were 9 men and 31 woman .The average obtaind for salivary potassium (5.59 mg/dl) witch was higher than the average of serum potassium (4.07) and the average of salivary glucose was (4.02) witch was less than the average of serum glucose (89.05).The result of paired samples T test (p-value <0.05) showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean of serum potassium and salivary potassium as well as between the serum glucose and salivary glucose .Pearson correlation test result showed that there is no significant correlation between serum potassium and salivary potassium (P-value >0.05) but there is potassium correlation between serum glucose and salivary glucose (P-value <0.001)
Conclusion
Due to the meaningful and statistical differences between salivary and serum potassium and glucose result of this research project shows that salivary sample probably can’t be used as a simpler and conservative method than blood sample and it needs more survey to be definite.
