Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of serum Procalcitonin serum level in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Materials and Methods: 120 cirrhotic patients with primary clinical diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis were enrolled. Serum and ascetic fluid samples were taken from the patient before receiving antibiotics. For paracentesis, ascites fluid was aspirated under sterile conditions and after collection, ascites was also transferred to count the number of leukocytes and biochemical analysis (sugar, protein and LDH). The patient's serum sample was taken simultaneously to measure leukocyte, glucose and procalcitonin. The samples were classified into patients with bacterial infection and patients without ascetic infection, and sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were determined by SPSS Ver. 16 software based on cut procalcitonin. Results:Of 120 patients, 61(50.8%) patients were female with mean age of 56.43±16.28 years. According to the results the Cutoff Point for procalcitonin in the detection of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis was 0.8 ng / ml with a sensitivity of 90.9% and specificity of 91.5%.
