Abstract
Introduction: The genus Teucrium from Lamiacea family has about 200 species that 12 of them are present in Iran and among them, one is Teucrium orientale. This plant has shown a variety of pharmacological effects due to its diverse flavonoid compounds. In Turkish folk medicine this plant is used as a stimulant, tonic, sudorific, appetizer, and for treatment of some digestive aliments and diabetes. In recent years, Regardless of abundant chemical drugs available for treating different kinds of illnesses, there is a grown attitude for using herbaceous drugs, and a majority of patients prefer to be treated with herbs rather than chemical-industrial drugs. Scope: Considering biological effects reported from this genus, a phytochemical study for purification and analysis of compounds present in Teucrium orientale, seems rational. Methods and materials: The extraction of dried and powdered aerial parts of the plant was sequentially carried out with n-hexane, chloroform and methanol with a Soxhlet device. The dried methanolic extract was fractionized by SPE method (on Sep-pak C18) with increasing ratios of methanol in water as the mobile phase. Purification of fractions with reverse phase preparative HPLC led to separation of numerous chemical compounds and determination of chemical structures was carried out with 1HNMR and 13CNMR. Results: Phytochemical investigation of Teucrium orientale methanolic extract, led to three different chemical structures. A phenylethanoid compound named Cistanoside B, A disaccaride caffeic acid ester, and a flavonoid compound known as Isorhamnetin 3-glucoside was identified in this investigation. Conclusion: The biological effects of this genus is probably due to its poly phenolic derivates.
