Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of interleukin 8 in cerebrospinal fluid in acute adult bacterial meningitis. Materials and Methods: In this study, the population of all adult adolescents (age> 13 years) referred to Imam Reza and Sina Hospital of Tabriz, which was approved after 2 years with symptoms of fever, headache, neck stiffness, abnormalities with probable diagnosis of meningitis. From all men with suspected meningitis, lumbar puncture (LP) of the space between the third and fourth vertebra was performed by a specialist physician. Patients’ level of conscicousness determined by GCS score. The cerebrospinal fluid was sent to the lab for analysis (cell count, WBC differentiation count, FBS, total protein, LDH, interleukin 8) and culture. Based on the results of cerebrospinal fluid analysis, patients were divided into two groups: bacterial meningitis and aseptic meningitis. Interleukin 8 measurements were performed by ELISA laboratory kit using US Affymetrix Manufacturing Kit. All Blood samples were discarded and excluded from the study and cutoff points determined by ROC curve. Results: The mean ± SD of IL-8 in patients with aseptic meningitis was 269.17 ± 48.59 pg/ml, and in the group of patients with bacterial meningitis was 1088.96 ± 526.55 pg/ml. There was a statistically significant relationship between the two groups in IL-8 levels (p=0.009). The level below the ROC curve for IL-8 was 0.980 (95% CI: 0.885-0.962) with p=0.001. Cutoff for IL-8 was used to detect positive bacterial meningitis with a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 83.1% of 297.6 pg/ml.
