Comparison of the early results of ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure by two methods: Trans catheter and open heart surgery in shahid madani hospital in tabriz
Abstract
Considering the different methods of closing VSD and the different results of these methods, we decided in this study, two methods of open and trans catheter surgery in terms of the results of the operation and the complications and consequences of these two methods and costs To compare the advantages and disadvantages of the trans catheter method in comparison to surgery, we compared it to two methods. Methods: The present study was conducted descriptively. In this study, patients with ventricular septal defects (VSD) treated with either open heart surgery or defect closure with trans catheter technique were included in the study. Patients with age and sex and type of ventricular impairment are similar. The necessary data related to the results and complications were extracted from the patient records and analyzed by statistical sampling. Finally, the data was entered into a statistical analysis program and we analyzed the data. Results: In this study, 93 patients with ventricular wall defects were evaluated. 50 patients underwent open surgery and 43 patients in the trans catheter group. In this study, the patients were approximately equal to girls and boys, and the mean age in the open surgical group was 8.8 years and in the trans catheter group was 10.55 years (P = 0.119). The duration of stay in the ICU and the hospital in the trans catheter group was significantly lower than the surgical group. Also, hospital costs in trans catheter group were significantly lower. The amount of blood products needed in the trans catheter group was lower than the other group (P <0.001), but the need for postoperative heart pacemaker (P = 0.058), post operative arrhythmias (P = 0.779), post-operative embolism, Shunt survival requiring surgical intervention (P = 0.649) and mortality rate in the group did not show any significant difference. The success rate of treatment in the surgery group was 96% and in the trans catheter group was 97.7% (P = 0.649). In this study, no mortality was reported in the hospital.
