Abstract
Introduction: quality of life, one of the main goals in the treatment of chronic patients, including renal failure. Purpose: This study is designed to improve the quality of life in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: A before and after interventional approach with no control group was designed. By convenience sampling 53 patients were selected with respect to the inclusion criteria in Maragheh. The information required for evaluating the QoL of patients was gathered using SEIQoL-Adapted and KDQoL instruments and then the self-management program was implemented. Three months later, the effect of the self-management program was assessed using the same questionnaire and with the participation of 40 patients were evaluated. Data were analyzed using spss 16 software. A total score for QoL was calculated using scales guidelines. Comparing the adjusted score of quality of life aspects using paired t-test was performed before and after intervention. Quality of life with demographic data were analyzed using analysis of variance and t-test. Results: The most important aspects of life were health, family, financial status, living conditions, leisure activities, relationships and socializing, religious and spiritual issues, medical knowledge, and therapies or treatments. Comparing the scores of the general aspects of QoL before and after the intervention showed no significant difference. Statistically significant differences were observed between the scores of the specific aspects of QoL for symptoms and problems, effect of renal disease, working status, and especially encouraging the employees and patients’ satisfaction before and after the intervention (p<0.05). The average total score of QoL was increased after executing the interventional program (p<0.001). However, no significant association was observed between QoL and sociodemographic features. Conclusion: SEIQOL-adapte and KDQOL tools to evaluate the quality of life of Iranian society hemodialysis patients are good tools. The patients’ views of the aspects of life could be used by health policy makers, clinicians and caregivers as a reliable guide to the most important priorities for treatment and medical interventions. The effectiveness of CDSMP program could be improved if applied along other therapeutic and well-being proceedings and the support of private charities and governmental organizations.
