Expectation of Marriage in Couples Counseling Marriage Counseling Center

One of the most important determinants of successful marriage is realistic expectation. The aim of present study was to investigate the expectation of marriage in couples referred to the premarital counseling center of Asad Abadi Hospital in Tabriz.
Methods: This study was performed on 142 couples (284 persons) who referred to the premarital counseling center of Asad Abadi hospital in Tabriz using the Marriage Expectation Scale or MES in the form of a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods including mean, median and standard deviation of marriage expectation.
Results: In this study, expectation of marriage in couples referring to premarital counseling center was investigated. According to the findings the highest frequency of expectation was idealistic expectation with a frequency of 52.1%. The frequency of realistic expectation was 42.6% and finally the frequency of pessimistic expectation was 5.3%. Among the independent variables, affecting marriage expectation, including age, sex, occupation, degree of education, and field of study, the only variable that had a significant relationship with expectation of marriage was degree of education. By increasing the level of education, the expectation of pessimistic marriage was significantly reduced and the idealistic expectation was elevated (p.value <0.05).
