Abstract
Background and Goal: The mouth and tooth health is considered as one of the important parts of lifestyle and its improvement requires utilization of appropriate learning methods in order enhance knowledge, attitudes, and performance of people. The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of two instruction methods as alive and instruction by showing videos on promoting the mouth and tooth health of 12 year old students in Tabriz. Materials and Methods: This is a case-control study. For this purpose, 204 12-year-old female students of public elementary schools in Tabriz were selected. The selection method of schools in Tabriz was so that three schools from three different districts of Tabriz were selected randomly using multi-stage cluster sampling. Samples in each school were randomly divided into three groups of control, video instruction and face to face instruction using random allocation software. At the beginning of the study, plaque index was measured and recorded in all three groups of students using Oleary Plaque Index. The second stage was the measurement of plaque index three months after the start of the study. Dental plaque was recorded before and after health education and the results were reported using descriptive statistics (mean ± SD). ANCOVA analysis of covariance was used to compare plaque index before and after instruction. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS17 software. Significance level was considered less than 0.05. Results: The results of this research showed that face-to-face instruction had a significant effect on the number of index plaque in the studied subjects. The mean plaque index was 39.41 before and 32.8 after instruction (P <0.05). There was no significant change in plaque index (P> 0.05) in instruction by video. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that face to face instruction has more effect than video instruction in reducing the plaque in 12 year old children.
